Purnima, a young adult with disabilities from our partner school, Navjyoti started with even having challenges with simple tasks requiring extensive physical assistance and repeated verbal cues. She often withdrew, finding solace in the corner or by the swings, refusing to engage with others. It was clear she faced significant hurdles in communication and participation. We built a culture of support for her, gave her a safe space where she could be herself. Slowly she began opening up, built a connection with coach and team.
What was once reluctance has blossomed into enthusiasm. Now, she eagerly gives high-fives during sessions and actively participates in activities. Her responsiveness to instructions is remarkable, and she encourages her peers with gestures of support and words of gratitude in English.
Today, Purnima’s journey tells a story of remarkable transformation, all through the power of sports. Not only has her physical agility improved—she now confidently performs high knees, jumps, kicks, and adeptly handles sports equipment—but her social interactions have flourished. Purnima willingly helps others, guiding them through activities with patience and skill. Her newfound confidence extends beyond sports. Purnima approaches each task with determination, never shying away from challenges. When tasked with assisting another child, she embraces the responsibility with care and dedication, ensuring everyone feels included.
The impact of the sports program on Purnima goes beyond physical skills; it has nurtured her social skills, confidence, and sense of belonging. Witnessing her growth from hesitant beginnings to a vibrant participant is a testament to the transformative power of structured sports activities in nurturing the potential of every child. Purnima’s story is one of resilience, progress, and the joy of newfound abilities—where every small achievement echoes a larger victory in her journey towards fulfillment and empowerment.
